NEFESH MOUNTAIN RELEASES THEIR NEW EP, “THE CABIN SESSIONS”

NEW YORK, NY, February 2, 2024 — Are you ready to experience the band that pulls on your acoustic bluegrass heartstrings, soars with electric soul, and celebrates diversity, hope, and radical love? Look no further than Nefesh Mountain, the Americana powerhouse led by the dynamic husband and wife team of Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg. As free-spirited troubadours and cultural innovators, Nefesh Mountain is a band at the frontlines of pushing boundaries in Americana music, drawing from a wide range of influences including American roots, bluegrass, jazz, and folk. Their sound and message is truly unique and unforgettable.

Rolling Stone said it best; “Nefesh Mountain preaches peace, understanding, and acceptance with musical muscle.” As masterful songwriters and instrumentalists, they are a beacon of hope for uncertain times. American Songwriter has called their music “arguably some of the best bluegrass ever made,” while Bluegrass Today describes it as “infectious, exuberant, and infused with pure melodic prowess.” No Depression has also praised Nefesh Mountain’s music as “crisp, clear, and magical.” Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering Nefesh Mountain for the first time, their music is sure to touch your heart and leave you feeling truly inspired.

Nefesh Mountain’s new EP, The Cabin Sessions, is available today, February 2,  2024. For the first time, the band dove into the music of their past, unearthing a wonderfully unique and personal selection of covers that reflect not only where they’ve come from but also where they’re headed. The EP features seven tracks, including two originals and five covers, each reflecting the values that have shaped the band over the years. Through this EP, the band pays homage to the music that has influenced them from Wilco to Coltrane, and embodies their growth both sonically and artistically.

The EP’s lead single, “Revival” was released earlier this year — a rendition of The Allman Brothers classic — showcasing the band’s creative evolution from their origins in an acoustic/bluegrass framework. The earthy, comforting, and inspiring nature of Zasloff's vocals in tandem with the deft acoustic flat-picking and soaring electric leads of Lindberg's guitar work truly shine through in this track. The band was inspired by the unbridled positivity and hope in the beautiful lyrics, and in Greg Allman’s iconic vocal in the original.

Lead singer Doni Zasloff shared that “despite the overwhelming hate, antisemitism, and racism in the world,” the band wanted to continue singing from a place of love, forward motion, and hope — picking up thematically where their last album left off. The lyrics of “Revival” speak to the power of radical love and how music can bring people together. The line that resonated with the band the most was: “We’re in a revolution, don’t you know we’re right.” When everyone is singing, there will be no one left to fight. “We hope this song inspires listeners to come together and work towards a better world,” Doni concludes.

The EP’s sophomore single, “The Narrow Bridge,” draws inspiration from a centuries-old Jewish teaching by Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. It explores the precarious nature of life and living, weaving a mystical allegory that captures the essence of the human experience. Originally recorded for their 2018 album, Beneath The Open Sky, the band has sought to revitalize the track by essentially doing a cover of their own music. The result is a fresh and captivating take on this thought-provoking masterpiece about letting go of fear and control to trust in the unknown, which is universal and relevant to everyone. According to Doni and Eric, the goal was to offer a new glimpse into the introspection and subtlety of this song by recording it in a new time and place in their lives,  bringing it from its strictly acoustic/bluegrass origins into the wider sonic world of Americana / roots that is celebrated throughout the entire EP.

Continuing to fearlessly tackle iconic tracks, the duo chose “What Light” off of Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky album as the third single from The Cabin Sessions. The song was chosen because of its mantra of self-authenticity and living by your own rules, a theme that resonates with the duo. The lyrics written by Jeff Tweedy are about the universal and distinct qualities in every one of us. As pioneers of Americana, the duo has never shied away from talking about their own cultural backgrounds and experiences as Jewish Americans. The song aligns with their personal values and their message of continued opportunity for rebirth.

Doni and Eric explain, “We threw our own rule book out the window, bringing electric guitars, drums and keys into the fold side-by-side with the traditional acoustic band sound.” Eric continues, “It was a blast getting to play slide for the first time in ages, feeling the sustain of the Gibson SG alongside the mandolins and fiddles that we know and love from the bluegrass world!”

Nefesh Mountain promotes fellowship and togetherness among people of  all backgrounds. They believe that everyone has more in common than they think and that differences should be celebrated rather than dwelled upon. The band encourages people to focus on their achievements and similarities rather than their grievances with one another. In a world where divisions seem to be growing, Nefesh Mountain's message of unity is more important than ever.
